I am having a new roof put on my home. The roofer says I can put a second layer to save money. Is this a good solution?

A second layer of shingles is a viable option and should be less expensive. You should understand that the second layer may not look as good as a completely new roof surface and the full lifespan of the new shingles may be shortened. With this method the roofer is not able to locate and repair hidden wood damage that may be exist. This method also limits the roofers ability to check the flashings around chimneys, vents and skylights and installation of new ice and water membranes to limit ice dams is not possible.
